Comprehensive Lymphedema Management in the Home Setting

Comprehensive Lymphedema Management in the Home Setting is a 65-hour certification course for healthcare professionals who are treating patients with lymphedema using Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) in their client’s home. The course consists of 15 training modules. The first 8 modules are online learning, followed by 7 hands-on lab modules completed in the classroom.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, each participant will be able to:

  • Discuss the circulatory and lymphatic systems and their importance in our overall health with patients, caregivers, and other healthcare providers
  • Differentiate between lymphedema, edema, and other associated pathologies
  • Describe the contraindications and precautions for lymphedema management
  • Apply the four components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for the management of lymphedema in the home setting
  • Provide in-home patient education, MLD techniques, appropriate compression management, therapeutic exercises, and mobility training for patients with lymphedema, with emphasis on upper and lower extremities and trunk
  • Demonstrate appropriate bandaging techniques for the upper and lower extremities
  • Measure and select appropriate compression garments for patients with lymphedema
  • Identify patient concerns, symptoms, side effects, and home setting issues that would warrant medical attention or a change in the treatment plan
  • Develop customized home programs for patients with lymphedema

Online Training Modules

The Course consists of 140 hours of Intermediate-level education. Students will first complete 65 hours of training in a Home Study Program.

  • Introduction to Course (0.5 hours)
  • Module 1: The Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems (7 hours) Topics: anatomy and physiology of the circulatory and lymphatic system, development of lymph and lymphatic load, and causes of insufficiency in the lymphatic system
  • Module 2: Lymphedema and Associated Pathologies (7 hours) Topics: lymphedema, edema, signs and symptoms, primary and secondary lymphedema, imaging, research review
  • Module 3: Introduction to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) (5 hours) Topics: CDT with MLD, effects, contraindications, and precautions of MLD, historical approaches of MLD
  • Module 4: Introduction to Compression for Lymphedema (3.5 hours) Topics: indications, long vs short compression bandages, compression pumps
  • Module 5: Nutrition & Lymphedema (3.5 hours) Topics: weight loss, triglycerides, low fat diets, ketogenic diets
  • Module 6: Self-MLD, Exercise, and Skin Care for Lymphedema (5 hours) Topics: teaching self-MLD, parameters and types of exercise, skin care
  • Module 7: Taping and Lymphedema (3.5 hours) Topics: indications for taping, properties and types of tape, application, precautions
  • Module 8: Lymphedema Management Essentials (9 hours) Topics: challenges and opportunities in the home setting, time management documentation, coding and billing, reimbursement

Hands-On Training Modules

After the home study is completed, the course consists of 75 hours of Classroom (Lab) Instruction.

  • Module 9: MLD for the Upper Extremities (9 hours) Topics: MLD hand placement, pressure, and positioning, node clearing, breathing, self-MLD
  • Module 10: Compression for the Upper Extremities (9 hours) Topics: ABI test, skin care, selection and application of various compression garments
  • Module 11: Upper Extremity Case Studies (4 hours)
  • Module 12: MLD for the Trunk and Lower Extremities (9 hours) Topics: MLD hand placement, pressure, and positioning, node clearing, self-MLD, exercise
  • Module 13: Compression for the Lower Extremities (9 hours) Topics: ABI, precautions for LE, measurement and application, toe bandaging
  • Module 14: Lower Extremity Case Studies (4 hours)
  • Module 15: Lymphedema Management for Special Patient Populations (6 hours) Topics: wound care, infections, scrotal lymphedema, bariatric patients
  • Final Written and Competency Exam (6 hours)
